MEETING REVIEW
In a year where the world's attentions will turn to London and the Olympic Games the BigFoot Meeting this year took on a distinctly sporting flavour! We were joined at the Royal Society of Medicine by Danny Crates – a gold medallist Paralympian – as the after-dinner speaker and had a mini-exhibition from Ben Mosley, official artist of Wembley Stadium.
The meeting format remained unchanged from 2011, acting as a forum for presentation, review and discussion on the leading topics of foot surgery, with an added focus on the challenges of minimally invasive foot surgery.
All in all, the meeting was a success, with feedback from the delegates praising the hotel, venue and organisation. Healthy discussion in the lecture theatre at the end of each session pushed us over time, but really brought the meeting to life. Hot topics included the use of MICA to treat Hallux Valgus, the use of DMOs in France and the role of the Sesamoid Bones – do they need to be covered by the metatarsal head for a good result?
Once again we welcomed John Cashman and Cure International back to BigFoot as our chosen charity to discuss their challenging orthopaedic work in Malawi.
Over £1100 was raised throughout the event through the sales of Ben Mosley's artwork in the evening and through the combined blood sweat and tears of delegates and WG staffers alike on the sponsored static cycling rollers. For each mile completed WG pledged to donate £5 to Cure and was an unusual and enjoyable addition to the event!
This money will go directly to John Cashman's hospital in Blantyre where his reconstructive lower-limb surgery and Club Foot treatment is changing the lives of the children of Malawi.
